Today is a historical day for Mexicans worldwide as we recognize Cinco de Mayo. First, a quick history lesson: Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo—which translates to “May 5”—is not Mexican independence day; that actually happens September 16. Instead, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s surprising victory against French forces at the storied Battle of Puebla, which took place May 5, 1862. The holiday is celebrated throughout Mexico— particularly in the city of Puebla—as well as within the US, where both Mexican natives and proud Mexican-Americans celebrate their homeland. If things are getting loud around your neighborhood tonight, it’s all in good spirits, as your neighbors are probably just partying in the name of Mexico.

Mexico has a rich musical culture that includes ranchera, corridos, banda and mariachi styles. Today, the country’s electronic music scene is exploding via a wave of young and exciting producers who are mixing the sounds of traditional Mexican lore with modern electronic beats. To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, we’ve compiled some of our favorite songs and artists from Mexico in this spicy playlist. Tequilas, tacos and techno. Burritos, beans and bass. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with the sounds of Mexico. And relive that time we spent 48 Hours at EDC Mexico.
