Gudrun Von Laxenburg came from out of nowhere in 2009, creating a buzz through word of mouth, and soon landed on Fatboy Slim’s Skint/BMG label. “It all started out as a joke,” says Daniel, one third of the classically trained Austrian trio, who prefer to use just their first names. “We never sat down and said, ‘Right, let’s make a serious, hard-hitting band.’ Even our name is a joke: We just took the street names we lived on and made an aristocratic name out of them.”

What people were talking about and turning up to see at parties all over Austria was Gudrun’s rebellious live approach to recorded electric music. “For the creation of our debut album, we had to choose an unusual approach—because first and foremost, we started out as a live band!” the trio told Insomniac recently. “Most of our tracks emerged from jam sessions on- and offstage and were also arranged for a concert experience. When we hit the studio to work on Panic!, we reinterpreted ideas, melodies and basslines from our jams to bring them to life for a ‘song’ context.”

Friends since their teen years, Daniel, Christoph, and July started out as a jam band playing friends’ parties. Thanks to dynamic performances that include custom gear, videos, lighting, and bespoke LED outfits, the trio soon moved on to playing clubs and festivals all over Europe. “The biggest challenge for us was to find a way to preserve our highly energetic live sound for a record. We wanted to create an album that combines the powerful sound of electronic music and also lets you feel the human aspect of playing instruments live!”

All of those elements are alive and kicking on their newest cut, “Just Can’t Get Enough.” Also present is a pop sensibility that pushes the prodigious trio into a zone somewhere between Glitch Mob and Underworld, where big beats, big vocals, and big guitar riffs collide euphorically.

“The punk rock attitude of distorted synths and brutal live drums became an essential part of our sound, and we feel that this approach represents our live background in the most accurate way: full throttle, four-to-the-floor electronic music with a load of punk-rock attitude!”

Available March 24 via Skint Records.
