Rossi B & LucaLong before many of you learned grime was not just the grossness you steer clear from in every bachelor pad ever, Slit Jockey Records were big-upping the genre like hungry rappers pushing out their fire mixtapes. The American label sure knows how to pick ‘em, and right now they’re pointing at a winning collaboration. Linking up on two living-up-to-the-hype originals, garage giants Rossi B & Luca throw bassline blows alongside grime rule-breaker Lenkemz. “Take U” brings out the best in slime-slathered wobbles and gooey UKG schematics, etched with ominous chords and dotty drums that will take heads straight to boomtown.

Were you impulsive on this track, or did you have a sketch in mind before you started?
Rossi B: I try not to plan when I’m producing; everything is spur-of-the-moment and basically a case of trial and error. With this particular track, everything came together real quickly. Guess we were just “on a roll.”

Creatively, how did the work on this track stack up to previous studio sessions? Was this more challenging to complete than others, and why?
Lenkemz: Rossi B got stuck in a hedge for two months, so he had to Bluetooth me parts. You can hear this in the track, I think.

What kind of response have you seen when you’ve played this out in your sets?
R: Have been spinning this one in the clubs for some time, and it always has a great response. It definitely seems to get people dancing.

Describe the best setting/activity to hear this track.
L: A crowded Budgens.

Who is the ideal person to remix this track?
R: Would love to hear a D&B remix. Shy FX, for sure!

If this song were a color, what would it be?
L: Teal.

What’s your favorite sound/synth/effect/etc. used here, and why?
R: The brass stab is a fave of mine. Have used it in loads of tracks—it’s kind of a signature sound!

How do you measure the “success” (whatever that means to you) of a track?
L: How many times I hear it when I’m waiting for a checkup at the G.U.M.
