Thomas Shaw and Ryan Henderson have been seizing the scene as if it were their own through a string of solid originals and collabs of late. Having demonstrated an adroit ability to push out music with mainstage merit, the Canadian duo known widely as Project 46 are fully ready to show off their songwriting side now (not that they haven’t already).

Through the release of their debut artist album Beautiful, due out next month on Ultra Music, the guys stake their claim as a long-lasting name in modern dance music. Exemplifying their knack to kick out clean crossover cuts is this tune, titled “The Truth.” It’s honestly one of the most emotive, albeit minimalistic, tracks featured on the LP and contains all the right ingredients to turn festival faces into heartfelt messes. Soaring out with the unfeigned belting of Jovany, the tune progresses from its melancholic piano phrases as it crescendos into a passion-fueled prog-house pumper. It’s safe to say Project 46 can add another piece to their crowd-pleasing portfolio.

Available July 10 via Ultra Music.

Did you discuss or exchange ideas with other producers while creating this track?
We work closely with a lot of great writing teams when it comes to our vocals and lyrics. They are such an important part of our writing process. When discussing the idea for this song, it really hit a personal spot with one of the writers and vocalist, Jovany. After writing it, he was on a plane to go get back “the one that got away,” and because we finished it so fast, he was able to play it for her and mend his relationship. Pretty crazy story, but true. I like to think after listening to our album, at least one song will connect with everyone in a special way.

Were you impulsive on this track, or did you have a sketch in mind before you started?
This track was started and completed 48 hours before we submitted our album to iTunes. We did so many songs during the production of the album, that we decided instead of having “Home,” “YOU” and “Eyes” on the album, we would pick a couple songs no one has heard and were previously cut. We quickly put “My Only Friend” back on and were really stuck on what else to include. So we said, “Screw it.” We called up some of our vocal writing team and discussed an idea, and we had the vocal and piano line done in less than a couple hours. We then spent the next couple days getting it to sound the way we wanted before submitting. When we sent it to Ultra, they loved it and asked why we had not shown them earlier. I think they were a bit shocked when we told them we finished it in just over a day.

Describe the best setting/activity to hear this track.
To be honest with you, we try to make our music suitable for almost any setting. We like to think you can listen to our music in a club, during a long road trip, or even while studying. We don’t like to make music that can only be enjoyed within a very particular environment.

How do you measure the success of a track?
We are lucky enough to have a lot of people listening to our music, and knowing a song has affected people in a positive way defines success for us! Music can be so powerful, and we try to use our power as songwriters to connect with people, and hope that our music relates to them and helps make positive impacts on their lives.

What’s your favorite sound/synth/effect/etc. used here?
I love the piano in this track. It is literally us sitting in front of a piano during a jam session, writing the melody. It’s always nice to put aside the computer aspect and VSTs and get back to using good, old-fashioned instruments once in a while. We really made an effort to incorporate real instruments in as many songs as possible on our album.
