Metronome #048: Jebu
Insomniac’s Metronome series features mixes from some of today’s fastest-rising electronic stars, as well as championed legends. It takes listeners deep across a wide range of genres, movements, cultures, producers, artists and sounds that make up the diverse world of electronic music.
As an up-and-coming producer, a whole lifetime could pass you by before your music wiggles its way up the hierarchy and reaches the crest of top-level selectors. Fortunately for Jebu—real name Jeremy Bunawan—he’s accomplished this feat in far less time. With names like Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso not only playing out his productions, but also signing them to their respective labels, the Melbourne-based upstart has already proved he is anything but a one-banger festival fluke.
“Consequences” is the name of his latest offering, and it’s the type of prog house weapon that DJs hold off on playing until the part of the party when they want to inflict critical damage on a crowd. Though he might still be considered a newbie to some, Jebu is already making the mainstage his own right from the jump-off.

Your recent single “Consequences” has been blowing up. What has been the most rewarding moment for you since it dropped?
Seeing a lot of DJs supporting it at their shows has been really great. Also, getting lots of tweets and messages was really nice, as well.
A lot of heavyweights have been playing out your tunes. What advice do you have for bedroom producers who are looking to get their name out there?
Be patient, and learn the craft! It has taken me over seven years before I reached a point where I was happy with my production skill, and I can still improve. Always make sure you are doing the very best work. You will get noticed if you are making something cool and different.
What has been the most drastic lifestyle change you’ve experienced since you started gaining major traction?
The biggest change would be how much time I spend producing. I’m in the studio all week from about 10am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and have really started to focus on my music in real detail. I’ve become a really, really big perfectionist. Every track has to be perfect.
Ivan Gough has been a frequent collaborator of yours. Can you share the most crucial lesson you’ve learned while working alongside him?
One would be to sometimes look back five to 10+ years on music to find inspiration for tracks, instead of listening to the current top hits. Ivan is all about having a “point of difference” on every record.
Laidback Luke has been mentioned as an artist you look up to for inspiration. In what ways do you hope to become a role model for others?
I really love to share what knowledge I have with everyone. Music isn’t a competition. I’d hope that people could see me as someone who is willing to teach and share what they know with others. I love to help people do the best work they can.
Do any of the tracks or transitions from your mix stand out to you?
Ilan Bluestone’s “Bonsai” is probably my favorite track in the mix right now. It’s a really beautiful record—sounds like the soundtrack to a dream.
What are your major goals for 2016?
To start doing more international touring, and to put out the best tracks I can possibly make.
