Friction’s 5 Essential Shogun Releases
Friction is a busy man, releasing high-caliber drum & bass on not only on his own Shogun Audio imprint, but on other major labels via remixes for artists like Wretch 32, Chocolate Puma and Stylo G, to name a few. His award-winning remix of “3005” by Childish Gambino was certified gold in the US, with over 20 million listens on Spotify.
The man known to his mum as Ed Keeley spoke with us about what’s next for him creatively and what he’s looking forward to at Escape: All Hallows’ Eve.
You’ve done a number of remixes this year. What’s been coming out of your studio?
I’ve done one remix called “6 Words” for Wretch 32, who’s really big in the UK. I’ve also done one for Chocolate Puma (“Step Back”) and Childish Gambino (“3005”). Just full-on with remixes this year. I’ve also been writing collaboration projects for Shogun at the moment called Friction Vs., which are different collabs with other drum & bass artists that I’m a fan of. I’m going to do a mini-LP for that.
What’s the idea behind that Vs. series?
It’s really just proper underground drum & bass. I wanted to do a load of tracks, work with some friends, and work with some producers that I get on well with in the studio. I’ve got half an actual artist album written, which I’m looking to finish next year. I’ve got too many projects! [Laughs] I’m just trying to keep up with it all.
What can fans expect from your upcoming set on the Chopping Block at Escape: All Hallows’ Eve?
I was at Bassrush earlier this year with Andy C, Alix Perez and Bro Safari. I loved the venue—it was a wicked, wicked place, and I can’t wait to go back. The Cali crowd is always up for it, which is what you really want.
