The legendary duo known as Ulterior Motive returns to center stage with this massive four-track EP, titled The Real, on Friction’s Shogun Audio imprint. There’s no question that the crew are still on top of the game, as this marks their first solo project since 2015 and their first-ever solo release with Shogun.

“We really enjoy the diversity that an EP offers,” the duo says when asked how the project came together. “We wanted to showcase a wider spectrum of what we’ve been working on over the past 12 months. We teamed up with vocalists like Verse and James Sunderland to bring back some of the blueprint Ulterior Motive sound with a modern twist. As always, we like to look back to look forward.”

The nod to the past is in the crisp and intricate percussive grooves that keep things locked as sweeping atmospheres and celestial melodies open up the heartache throughout the EP. Still, it’s this bit, “I Remember” with James Sunderland, that we keep putting on repeat, as the feels are just too good. Rising up out of the misty intro, Ulterior Motive craft their signature epic atmospheres before unleashing the call and response between the bottom-end and breakbeats at the core. It’s the perfect foundation for James Sunderland to do his thing, and once he opens up the gates, there’s no turning back. The untouchable, smooth vibes prove that Ulterior Motive can hold it down on the silky side of the dancefloor just as much as they can crush with the rough and rugged.

This one drops tomorrow via Shogun Audio, so keep your eyes and ears peeled for the full release. For now, hit play, close your eyes, and let this one carry you away into the weekend.

Available January 27 via Shogun Audio.
