The thought of a cross-pollination between house and bass music might have sounded like a joke less than a decade ago, but it was music to the ears of pioneers like Valy Mo, who live for the challenge. The French producer has made a name for himself through a genre-fluid approach to dance music that has allowed him to fit right in at home on labels like UKF, Confession, and OWSLA just as much as he does on Ultra and Cr2. It’s all about versatility in his book, and that trait really shines on his latest single for Pinnacle Collective.

“With ‘Mars,’ I wanted to make a song in two contrasted parts,” says Valy Mo. “The first part with charming piano chords and the voice of Charlotte, like the calm before a storm, and the second part a powerful and beat-down drop.”

The dichotomous design is not only executed flawlessly, but it also speaks to the depth and dynamic he continues to reach for in his work. Both emotion and energy are sitting in the counterparts of “Mars,” with the calming chords and vocalizations providing a stark contrast to the synth swells in the climax. It’s yet another layer to be added to the genius that is Valy Mo.

Available November 17 via Pinnacle Collective.
