London’s Ricin is back with a powerful new EP, Eve Hyper, showcasing his eclectic and technical prowess in the bass world. A perfect example is the epic-in-scope tune “HAARP.” This track is truly a journey unto itself, at times mysterious, at times full of classic and gritty sound.

Opting for a deeply angular intro, Ricin brings in cinematic pads and off-kilter samples. Warm and strange, only a skittering snare holds the smallest semblance of a beat. The ambient layers, both melancholic and rough-edged, are finally broken by a build that seems to come from out of nowhere. From here, a techy rhythm hammers in with the best of the worlds of dubstep and drum & bass, but the soundtrack quality of “HAARP” rolls back to the front, in perfect unison with the shuffling beats and bass.

Never sitting still, this track flows in and then backs out in a seeming instant. It packs enough punch to make a listener move, but it unapologetically stays away from standard dance territory. The dynamic tension between the emotive ambience and the hard-hitting glitch beats is used to perfect effect. Ricin has clearly spent a great deal of time and effort here, and it shows through.

Available September 1 via Saucy Records.
