Gui Boratto’s Flip of Alexis Tyrel’s “Rebecca Loos” Is a Rugged Techno Weapon
Launched a decade ago, Lessismore is currently celebrating its 10-year anniversary with a string of re-releases from the Dutch label’s back catalog, featuring remixes by popular artists like Hernan Cattaneo, Gui Boratto, the Advent, and others.
One of these standout re-releases comes from label boss Gideon Hommes (aka Alexis Tyrel). His Imagine This Picture That EP features three versions of his track “Rebecca Loos,” including a Gui Boratto remix that’s well-conceived. The Brazilian master toughens up the original’s dense beats, melodic arpeggios and soft synth and string layers into a rugged techno weapon that’s perfect for the underground club scene. Check it out below, and find out what Tyrel had to say about the idea behind the original:
Personally, I find it hard to collaborate in music projects with others, because making music is, most of the time, a private experience and not a democratic process. To be honest, I do not remember when I made the melody for the track, but I do know how the track came about. At a time when I was a pretty dark and underground-oriented producer, a former friend of mine said, “Can you do something nice for the girls?” I said, “Yeah, of course; let’s get out of my comfort zone.” I scrolled through my sketches, and this melody hit us both. I immediately pulled down some notes for the bassline and made an easygoing beat to it. To finish off the track, he asked me to put in something people would remember. We started spinning ideas. Rebecca Loos, at the time, was a public topic, so sampling her voice made sense for this project.
