Emiliano Comollo Opts for an Introspective Mood on “Hoag”

There’s a burning sense of restraint bubbling up from every Emiliano Comollo record, and it comes directly from his years digging through endless bins of obscure techno records. His extensive knowledge was first showcased through residencies at Italian hot spots Doctor Sax Club and After Club, but it has translated well into his own workings.

His latest has been picked up by Parallel Label, and it shows Comollo punching way above his weight. While the title cut, “Kepler,” boasts his ability to outlay meticulous drum sequences, “Hoag” radiates on the backside with its heady inclinations. In a fluid and sprawling motion, the tune graciously unravels with hushed female vocals that roll out over swirling padlines and downy drumwork.
