It would require more time than we have today to chew over the illustrious career of Dave Seaman. Being at the helm of the underground for over 25 years now, the Leeds-born legend casts a tremendous shadow that simply can’t be ignored. And yet his influence continues to move full steam ahead, as he lands his debut on Hive Audio next week.

Originally drawn up to coincide with his Loopmasters release, Seaman’s latest single “Gumball” is the type of tune that rolls into the club and never really leaves thenceforth. The product of a seasoned voyager, his offering hoists billowing melodies that are anchored by tight drum work and deep-diving tones. When it comes to grooves, Dave Seaman surely knows the ropes.

Available June 8 via Hive Audio.

Were you impulsive on this track, or did you have a sketch in mind before you started?
The track actually came together really quickly out of some of the parts I’d created with my engineer Jay Gilbert for a sample pack we released through Loopmasters late last year. As part of the release, Loopmasters asked everyone to make a demo track out of the loops and samples to help promote it. That was what this track originally set out to be, but we quickly realized it was too good to give away as a demo, so we made something else for the sample pack production and finished “Gumball” off for a full release.

Who is the ideal person to remix this track?
I think Dario D’Attis did a great job. It was one of the conditions I gave to Hive when I agreed to sign it to them—that Dario did the remix.

How does this production reflect your personality/ethos?
I think it’s one of those tracks that manage to straddle genres. It got put in the deep house section on Beatport, but it could easily have gone in tech house, which I think reflects what I try to do as a DJ: play across different genres. So, it’s nice to encapsulate that in a production. It’s also got classic elements, but done in a thoroughly modern way. I like that, too.

Have you played this one out in any of your sets? If so, what was the response?
I’ve had a great response everywhere I’ve played it, including a lot of DJs coming up to find out what it was, which is always nice. We got great feedback on the release from a wide array of DJs—everyone from Groove Armada to Gorge, Niggemann to Tanzmann and Hot Since 82 to Sasha.

What’s your favorite sound/synth/effect/etc. used here?
The two main synth lines are both from the Prophet synth, and I think they work perfectly together. It was a completely random accident, too; like I said, they were two individual parts we’d done for the Loopmasters pack, but when we realized they worked so well together, we knew we had the basis of a great track.
