Amani Friend and Treavor Moontribe, better known as Desert Dwellers, have been a mighty force in the electronic music scene since the late ‘90s. With a recent celebration of 20 years, the duo holds a legacy of pioneering downtempo, psybass, and tribal house. Constant collaborators, they often work with a number of musicians for each release. All of this skill, collaboration, and experience can be found on their upcoming album Breath. And a perfect example of what this release holds in store is reflected in one of the LP’s offerings by the name of “Traversing the Endless Road.”

Like all of Desert Dwellers music, this song is a journey. It combines a dizzying array of elements and layers, all woven into a mesmerizing tapestry of sound.

“‘Traversing the Endless Road’ sweeps us into the seductive soundscapes of Persian lore, drawing upon a rich tradition of Middle Eastern folk music, and infusing it with the magnetic rhythms and hypnotic progressions of downtempo tribal house,” Desert Dwellers tells Insomniac. “Inspired by the legacy of ancient heritage, this imaginative sonic tale is underscored by the hauntingly vivid vocal work of longstanding Desert Dwellers collaborators Ricardin and Meagan Chandler, the spirited drum play of Drumspyder, and the vibrant instrumental work of world-fusion devotee Māh-Ze-Tā. Bringing an entrancing edge and ethnic flavor to Desert Dwellers’ forthcoming album, ‘Traversing the Endless Road’ explores the sensuous, mystical, and celebratory spirit imbued into the very essence of world music.”

And indeed, there’s a lot of powerful work existing within this gem. Rich layers of tribal drums roll under disparate wind instruments, and many haunting vocals call out urgently to the listener. But despite these solemn elements being wrapped in dubby reverb, the beat and rhythm is sure to get bodies moving. This is the kind of track that many producers simply can’t pull off without the experience and dedication that a group like Desert Dwellers brings to the table. While the album is slated to drop at the end of the month, you can see all of the magic Desert Dwellers hold with their current tour. There are still a number of dates across the US left (including a stop in L.A. this Saturday, in fact), so check them out.
