Josh Evans

Origin: None

Hey guys, Josh Evans here. Music is my therapy. It helps me to breathe, relax to heal. On the other hand, music can give me energy, power and hope. It plays as the backdrop to my entire life, and at the same time it is the primary focus of everything I do, whether it is playing video games, watching movies, working, driving, etc. Whether it’s creating a simple playlist for a road trip, or writing an entirely new song, the environment can be altered and shaped with music. It’s both powerful and beautiful.

Interview

Home Town: Phoenix, AZ
Currently Living: Scottsdale, AZ
Origin Of Name: Nothing too special, just my regular ol’ name. Seemed appropriate, as my music is an expression of me.
Weapon of Choice: The Master Sword
Source of Power: Music. I love listening to all types of music. Regardless of the genre, when something hits me and moves me, it inspires me.

Are you impulsive with your work or do you have a sketch in mind before you start?
Generally, I start out with a story I want to tell, which can include the mood or vibe, along with a basic idea of the arrangement. From there, it’s all impulsive and pretty random.

How, if at all, does listening to music figure into your creative process?
Listening to music plays a huge part in my creative process. There is such brilliance out there that it is impossible not to be inspired by it all. The last song I heard which really inspired me was BT’s “Skylarking.” The atmosphere and intricacies are incredible; there is so much emotion in that piece.

If we pressed Shuffle on your iPod while you went to the bathroom, what would you be embarrassed to come back to us listening to?
Probably the Italo Brothers, haha. I love their stuff, it’s a guilty pleasure of mine.

What should everyone just shut the fuck up about?
Genres. People are constantly evolving, obviously their art and music will reflect that. It seems like artists aren’t allowed that freedom. If they make something new, something different than what they had before, then they are insulted and looked down upon, regardless if the new stuff is any good. The Beatles are a great example of what change can lead to. First, listen to their earlier albums, then their later stuff like Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club BandAbbey Road, etc. They sound entirely different, but it’s brilliant!

Is success physical or internal?
Success is entirely internal. To me, success is realizing you are doing the right thing for you and that you are growing and pushing yourself to new heights constantly. Being happy with what you are doing is the highest form of success, regardless of fame or fortune.

What advice would you offer someone thinking about entering the Discovery Project competition?
Be yourself. Very cliché, but expressing yourself entirely without limitations, without worrying about sounding like someone else, is your best shot. Go crazy.
