While he’s been on the market for only a couple of years now, Johnny Trika has made considerable headway in that short time frame. The Montreal-based producer originally popped into the picture after making a strong impression on minimal mastermind Dubfire. Trika clearly got in good with the SCI + TEC label boss, considering that the label has exclusively housed his releases. Some have even gone to the extent of calling him Dubfire’s protégé, which is obviously not a bad place to be.

However, Trika will be venturing outside of his home base at the end of the week with his first foray on a different catalog. It’s also the only time he’s chosen to invite on a remixer, so his Fast Life EP is a nice change of speed. Insomniac has latched on to the backside of the two-tracker, “Dreamless King,” a windy, eight-minute head trip powered by sublime bleeps and an ethereal atmosphere. That’s our take on it, at least, but here’s how Trika himself puts it:

Most of the time I produce music, I don’t walk into the studio with a fully developed concept in my mind. I had the idea while amidst a session, and I wanted to put a certain energy into the track, but with spacious elements. I got inspired from the 2009 era of minimal, too, which had a lot of “clicks and bleeps.” This track is definitely a standout for me. Every time I play it at a show, it always gets an interesting reaction; it’s not really a track you can compare to something else, exactly. What I did—and what I always try and do with my music—is to make something no one has ever really heard before, or to develop certain elements in such a way that it sounds totally different. “Dreamless King” is a mix of minimal, with a touch of progressive elements—which, for me, keeps the track driving.
