We capture a mental fingerprint of some of our musical and cultural heroes and preserve it in cyber-amber for the wonderment of future generations. This is the Insomniac Questionnaire.

iQ: Steve Lawler

What was your favorite toy as a child?
It would have to have been my Star Wars figures, and ships and things. According to my parents, I would always sit with all my figures and play for hours. I think I liked controlling their lives with my imagination. I see the link now!

What is the best advice you’ve ever gotten? Did you take it?
Yes, from a friend when I was down and out, and that was: “Never let anyone or anything knock you down; get up, stand up, chin up. You pussy. Don’t let weakness get in your way.” I think that was by far the best advice I ever had, even though it was hard at that time. It made me stronger.

What part of your day do you look forward to most?
I love, LOVE spending time with my daughter. She is so funny, and happy all the time—a proper little bundle of joy. She has me in line, that’s for sure!

What’s the best time you’ve ever had without spending money?
The above.

What is your most treasured possession?
The most treasured thing in my entire life is my daughter, but she isn’t a possession; so I would have to say a gold signet ring from my grandfather. Not only is it super cool, but it’s from my late grandfather, who was an inspiring gentleman.

What is your favorite word?
Fuck.

Do you owe an apology to anyone?
No, I’m pretty sure I don’t. I treat others how I expect to be treated, and if I’m ever wrong, I am the first to admit it and apologize.

When is the last time you were really scared?
When I was around 19 years old, I was mixed up in the wrong crowds (very wrong), and I always felt anxious of my surroundings.

What is the last thing you googled?
Ha-ha. Honestly, “Life Fitness.” I’m looking for a professional treadmill for my home gym.

What’s the last sound you would want to hear before you die?
You know what, I can’t even answer that because, of course, it’s my daughter. I kinda get upset even thinking about it.

Do you have any recurring dreams or nightmares? If not, what’s the last dream you remember having?
I can’t remember my last dream. Yes, I have quite vivid dreams sometimes and have been known to sleep-talk, sleepwalk, amongst other sleeping activities!

How do you measure success?
I used to measure it by bums on seats—in my world all I ever wanted was to perform to a packed club, arenas, that type thing. That’s what I wanted success for, as there is nothing like it in the world. Performing to a packed room, it comes with a certain energy, and as a creative DJ, that often means I can really do what I do best. But more these days, it’s how happy I am in life in general, and hearing good news of friends and good people around me can easily make me feel successful.

If you could have one magical/super power, what would you want?
It would be to cast Karma on those who need it!

Have you ever had a brush with the paranormal or supernatural?
No, I’m not a believer in things I can’t see or experience myself. I believe in energy and spirituality, but not ghosts.

What do you remember about your first kiss?
I don’t remember it. Is that bad?!

What four words best describe you?
I have no idea; maybe you’re best at asking someone else. I don’t want to describe me. I am me, and that’s it.

What’s the last impulsive thing you did?
I’m always impulsive—always have been. I went to look at the new F-Type Jag just to see it and walked out owning one. Ouch.

Do you have a pet?
Not right now; my last pet was a cocker spaniel. Her name is AMBA. She lives with my brother now. She is lovely—a really soft, quiet, cuddly little thing.

What is your strongest or best personality trait?
Ha-ha, I’m going to sound a right twat for saying this. But it’s got to be my honesty. Often gets me in trouble in this strange world we live in, but I believe it’s a great strength to have.

Do you believe in any conspiracy theories or urban legends?
I’m a massive conspiracy theorist. In fact, they’re only called conspiracies by the people that don’t believe them; I often call them the truth or the REAL news.
