The Architects “Movin On”
There’s a lot riding on the first time an artist decides to let go of a collection of tunes, but Artur Januszkiewicz and Alan Brant are about to prove they have all the necessary tools to build themselves a weather-proof career. Based out of Chicago, the duo known as the Architects are about to drop their freshman effort next week on HMWL, which lives up to the high hopes already surrounding their fresh sound.
Framed around the four-floor workings from their hometown, the duo’s The Blueprint EP is a well-designed house offering with three distinct tracks stacked atop its old-school foundation. The master chamber, “Movin On” is a clear indication these dudes are going places, and fast, as it boasts a twangy lead that’s held up by triplet bass notes and crisp percussive work.
Available June 12 via HMWL.
What’s the takeaway here? Is there a message or vibe you hope to get across to listeners?
What we tried to express with The Blueprint EP is our various musical influences that range from house to garage to techno. For a freshman release, it was important for us to show that we have a versatile style that is always evolving. The tracks are meant for the club, but they are great for any occasion. For us, no matter whoever you are and wherever you are, music is meant to be shared and experienced. Chicago is a place that takes house music very seriously, and we wanted to express that idea through our tracks.
What were you doing at the time that you came up with the idea for this song? Did you drop what you were doing and get to work? Did you make notes and get to it when you can?
We actually made it in Columbia, Missouri of all places. Alan is almost done with school at the University of Missouri so we have a satellite studio down there. We both went down for a week in January while school was out of session to shut out the distractions of Chicago life and focus on getting some tracks done. The whole EP was written and arranged during a weeklong production marathon. We live for weeks like that.
Was there one particular moment in the recording or mixing process of this track that made you feel as though you were creating something pretty damn special?
We were under a massive time crunch that week in January. We knew we only had one week together to get something done before the semester started when would be separated for many months at a time. We had a bunch of open projects that we were painstakingly trying to finish, but with no luck. The vibe wasn’t there; the muse was missing. The moment it clicked was when we decided to completely scrap our previous work and start from the beginning. Suddenly, we had something going. Then it was only a matter of time before we sat back and realized that what had come together was sometime we would be proud of.
Do you think advances in computer technology and gear have affected your creativity? How so?
Absolutely. The music making tools have been there for a while, but the main advantage of software for us is accessibility. It’s a balancing act however, we love the convenience of software, but there’s nothing quite like that proper analogue sound. To get the best of both worlds, all of our tracks are mixed and mastered on an analogue mixing board to get that added warmth.
Who is the ideal person to remix this track? Why?
Marc Kinchen (MK) is a huge influence of ours. Some of the elements in this track were inspired by his productions. We’re huge fans; all he does is make gold records.
