On the heels of their recent Whiplash EP for 2020 Vision, PBR Streetgang has taken on the acclaimed Russian band Pompeya. Their remix of “To a Kid” is a dark and brooding deep house lurker that’s fueled by late-night mischief. You can grab this remix now if you preorder the entire package that includes remixes from Jerome LOL, Amtrac, the Twelves and more.

Did you discuss or exchange ideas with other producers while creating this track?
No. When we are working on a remix, or any production, we tend to lock ourselves away until it’s done. Experience has taught us it’s the best way for our process.

Were you impulsive on this track, or did you have a sketch in mind before you started?
We have certain techniques and ways of working that we like to start things off with, but after that, we just let it unfold organically. In the case of a remix, we let the stems of the track lead us to where we think it needs to go.

Do you think advances in computer technology and gear have affected your creativity?;
They have certainly affected our workflow and our ability to get our ideas out of our heads and into the real world with more speed and ease. In terms of making us more creative, I’m not sure it has. Advances in technology have also given the producer endless choices, which on the face of it is great, but if not harnessed in the right way can stifle the creative process by being spoiled. There is a lot to be said for music that’s made with a limited amount of equipment or plugins. Limitations can be the breeding ground of creativity

Describe the best setting/activity to hear this track.
4am in a small club with the lights down low.

Creatively, how did the work on this track stack up to previous studio sessions? Was this more challenging to complete than others?
Not really. There were lots of great parts with this remix, as they’re a band that play instruments, so lots of great little pieces of music to choose from. We were spoiled with choices, almost. If anything, the challenge was just deciding what essential parts to use that would keep some of the spirit of the original, but also take it to a place we wanted it to go.

What’s your favorite sound/synth/effect/etc. used here?
I don’t think we really have a favorite, but there are lots of bits we love and like to use when the time in our project suits it. We’re not slaves to a certain sound.
