Striking hot with an unruly release on DFTD next week, Mark Fanciulli offers up a sure-shot in the form of his latest single. Bred for the sternest of club floors, “Control” sees the Londoner craft a ferocious slice of house that will repeatedly drive revelers of the rave to their groove-located destination. Fanciulli cranks out a relentless rhythm over Joe Le Groove’s arresting vocals, stitching the buff basslines and moody chords with on-point percs (adding in some of that clutch woodblock action). It’s beastly. Included with this out-of-control single is the a cappella, serving as an open invitation for others to give their take on this wicked sonic wizardry. Have at it, people.

Available February 9 via DFTD.

Were you impulsive on this track, or did you have a sketch in mind before you started?
When starting a track, you might have a plan in place—which 90 percent of the time doesn’t work out. However, with “Control,” I didn’t have any sketch in my head. It began with raw drums, which is the case a lot of the time, as I like to primarily focus on creating the groove. When the track was finished, or so I thought, I decided it needed an extra ingredient. I was keen to get Joe to add his thing to the record. He came back with some great lines, which I cut up, processed and layered against the rest of the piece to reach the end result. Something I like about the release is that people will be able to buy the a cappella, too. Maybe they can use it in their sets, or to even make their own remixes.

Describe the best setting/activity to hear this track.
The best setting will be a nightclub/rave environment. This is what “Control” was made for, and I hope that people will dig it the more places it is heard in. A club is the best place for this music, for obvious reasons. We all know the feeling and excitement of getting to hear one of our favorite DJs play new music, and when it’s something that really connects with us, the emotions flow around the venue.

Who is the ideal person to remix this track?
Right now, it would be one of two people: Truncate or KiNK. Both have their own unique sound and are incredibly innovative in both their original and remix works. Every time I get to hear something new from them, I get the same feeling of excitement and immediately want to hear their output.

How does this production reflect your personality/ethos?
I am quite open-minded and varied with what I like to do, and I think this connects with the track’s characteristics. For example: Halfway through, the direction of the record changes when Joe says, “There’s a switch.”

How do you measure the success of a track?
People measure the success of a production in many ways, like its chart position, the amount of units it sells, or even the number of compilations it gets licensed to. I measure the success of a track in its accessibility—its ability to reach as many people as possible. For example, a house record that would be played by the most hardened techno DJs, and vice versa.
