A.W.O.L. ft. Freedom Fry “Racers” Radio Edit
The world is a stressful place, so we could all use a cathartic release by the time Friday rolls around. Luckily, there’s a new outfit out of Berlin that’s here to help us relax a bit. Today, A.W.O.L. celebrates their new release that just dropped on the esteemed No Brainer imprint. The track is marked by tasty guitar licks and laid-back vocals that will make you hit the road with your lover with no destination in mind.
A.W.O.L. is already back in the studio wrapping up the next EP, and Freedom Fry is gearing up for SXSW in Austin this month. Freedom Fry also has a new song called “Yeah You” that just dropped.
What’s the takeaway here? Is there a message or vibe you hope to get across to listeners?
Bruce Driscoll (Freedom Fry): We’re all “racers.” People live fast-paced lives, and when we’re done with one thing, then we’re immediately on to the next. There’s a bittersweet quality about that. Life already goes by in a blink of an eye, yet most of us can’t seem to live it fast enough. The message here would be to live your own life and go your own speed no matter what.
Did you discuss or exchange ideas with other producers while creating this track?
Marie Seyrat (Freedom Fry): There wasn’t much discussion, oddly, but the beautiful thing was we all arrived on the same wavelength somehow. Once we heard the depth and feeling of the chords, then it was easy to get inspired with melodies and lyrics. Each of us were free to play our part, which was even more inspiring. The title and main melodic elements came together quite quickly.
Choose one feeling that sums up this release and describe it to us.
Bruce: Slowly ascending and being at the highest point of the roller coaster just before it’s about to quickly descend. Also, knowing that the rush is eminent and waiting for you.
Marie: For me, it’s the state of being wired—always moving, creating, and not being able to turn it off. But you wouldn’t even if you could.
Describe the best setting/activity to hear this track.
A.W.O.L.: I think it’s quite universal. It’d work well in a sunrise DJ set, or cruising along Côte d’Azur with your lover—or even better, to be making love. Maybe not while driving, though…
What’s your favorite sound/synth/effect/etc. used here?
A.W.O.L.: I’ve gotta say that it’s the guitar! As a kid, the guitar was the second instrument I learned to play after the piano, and of course, I loved it! At that age, it was way cooler being a guitar player than a piano player. Nevertheless, at some point sequencers and samplers got the upper hand, and I never really used guitar parts in my work anymore, so it was great fun to cram out the old amplifiers, different speakers, stomp effects, different mics in different rooms, and record all sorts of different chord layers and melody lines. It was good fun getting out of the chair, running around the studio, and stumbling over cables.
