SWAGE has become a name synonymous with versatility. Whether he’s knocking back the grungy bottom-end beef in bass house, booty-shaking broken rhythms, or his ghetto-fabulous take on bass, anything he puts his hands on feels like a much-needed update on the founding sounds of dance music. The L.A. producer—who surprisingly has a background in classical music and theater—has found the perfect balance between the various influences that have led him to his quickly rising career.
While he’s not pegged to any one style of music, he says he is “going back to my roots with some housey breaks” on his debut single on IN / ROTATION. Out today, “Shut Down” sees him “finding the best balance between something that grooves and hits.”
And this one does just that from every angle. A slick, crunchy bassline rolls under thick layers of funked-up drums. Spicy edits and chopped-up vocals keep the energy flowing into a second drop that’s even more intense than the first.
