Since launching in 2012, David Squillace’s This and That Lab imprint has served as a hotbed for superior house and techno, with a solid back catalog that has leaned on high-caliber artists including Carl Cox, Yousef, Carlio Lio, Guti—and the list goes on. Back in 2012, they hit it big with an atmosphere-rich collab between Re.You and Florian Busse, called “Cuando,” which captivated club floors with its organic-driven drums and soul-stirring Spanish vocals. The now-classic track is getting a much-deserved reprise in the shape of a stacked remix package that includes reworks from Matthias Tanzmann, Haiku 575, and the label boss himself, Squillace.

The take offered up by Tanzmann is getting the shine from us today, as the German groove aficionado pulls the piece into a place where “controlled chaos” is the key phrase. He chops up chunks of the transcendental chants and drizzles them over a bed of amped-up percussive patterns, frothy flourishes, and a quick-darting synth lead that will have heads reaching for the ceiling. It’s an uptempo take that veers into a decidedly different direction without sacrificing an iota of the original’s soul—a trick only someone like Mathias Tanzmann can pull off with such grace.

Available June 8 via This and That Lab.
