The real ones in the bass music world would be quick to recognize G-REX as an artist you should never underestimate, because he keeps coming with that low-end insanity. The L.A.-based producer is an Icon Collective graduate who moved to the city from the Midwest in order to pursue his passion for production, after being exposed to the sheer power living in the beats of dubstep and trap. But those aspirations have already crystallized into career-breaking accomplishments with a string of his releases already sliding into labels like TWONK, Kannibalen, Buygore, and more. Even Liquid Stranger’s Wakaan imprint was so impressed with the brain-smattering “Babatunde collab” he threw down with PEEKABOO, they couldn’t wait to invite him back for his own solo EP. And so here we are.
While each of the four tracks on Rift offers a deep glimpse into the brain-tickling sound design G-REX has perfected over the years, it’s hard to look past the ingenuity he kicks out alongside Dubloadz on “Leviathan.” With the mind power of another show-stopping name on tap, together they rain down with a furious wrath like it’s doomsday. An ominous string intro gets under your skin for the first few bars, before the pitched-down vocal ducks in and out between the gaps of a slow-churning beat that was made to snap spines in half. You should do all that is in your power to cop this back-breaker, as well as the other three original offerings, when the EP drops this Friday.
Available October 19 via Wakaan.
