Chuurch Puts a Dirty Lean on With You. and Vince Staples’ “Ghost” [Free Download]

Calgary super duo Chuurch are dropping the second installment in their remix series, hot on the heels of the flip of Rezz and 13’s “DRUGS!” This round sees Jeff Wilson and Justin MacLean going deep into the woods of With You. and Vince Staples’ “Ghost.” It’s hard to imagine taking the track further into purple dream places, but Chuurch does just that.

Right off the bat, the tempo gets cranked way down into that signature sweet spot that’s well below four-on-the-floor house and techno, while never dropping off to the churn of trap and dubstep. This remix lets things take their sweet and swerving time, starting off with a very sparse beat that will bob heads to its rhythm.

As gritty synths rumble underneath, Chuurch brings in Vince Staples’ substance-fueled verses to wander over top. Meanwhile, the beat shuffles somewhere between breaks and broken beat—from a hip-hop vantage—and the whole thing builds to a bassline that would melt skin to bone over a club system. All of this plays out with a psychedelic hypnosis that pumps from the very heart of the original.

This is deceptively tight production. What Jeff Wilson and Justin MacLean have done is created stripped-down, low-lying bass music that crackles with energy. It’s the kind of remix that puts more fuel on the fire of their already roaring reputation.
