It’s always worth repeating: Insomniac fans, the real Headliners of the show, are the reason we stay up late doing what we do—and why we get up early. Doctors, soldiers, teachers, yoga instructors, chefs, baristas—you name it—our Headliners might grind and roll their way through life along different paths on their way to the dancefloor, but they’re like family once they’ve arrived. In celebration of their uniqueness and the music and lifestyle that connects us all, we give you HeadlinerHIGHLIGHTS, an ongoing series profiling the diverse individuals that make up the Insomniac community.

Name: Nicole White (aka NEW)
Profession: Field/lab tech (2.5 years)
Currently living: El Centro, CA
First Insomniac show attended: EDC 2008
Spirit animal: Wolf/Tiger/Turtle/Hawk/Dolphin/Horse
Currently listening to: Nothing specific. I’ve been listening to EDC 2016 playlists and various artist albums. I’ll usually get hooked on a good track or artist for a while and then look for something new.

Let’s start off with a little about you and dance music.
I’ve had many rave names and have been around the scene a bit. I’m always looking to get out to an event and meet new people. The music and good times keep bringing me back. I’ve been to more parties than I can recall.

How would you describe an Insomniac event to someone who has never been?
I actually was just getting my neighbor hyped up to go to EDC [Las Vegas] 2017. I was like, we can plan our outfits, book a hotel room, and just party! The venue will be massive, [with] people and lights everywhere. The Vegas Strip will be taken over by ravers, and most of the hotels booked up.

Insomniac events in general are good. I’ve been to events like Nocturnal and EDC. It’s a very liberating experience: dancing, wandering around, listening to DJ sets, and meeting new people. Any fears or concerns in your personal life fade away while you’re there. Parties are often one of the only times you get back together and see people you haven’t seen since your last party. I can blast music in my car and at home, but there just isn’t anything like a big bassline pouring out of surround-sound stage speakers.

What’s a typical day like for you at work?
I work 12-hour shifts that rotate days to nights every few days. I’m sampling liquids, solids, gasses, and running chemical analysis on them. I produce numerical data on a geothermal industrial process. You can usually find me in the lab, playing some music and performing some chemical tests.

Do you go out and party with coworkers?
I keep it very separate. Most of my coworkers have families they attend to. There is also a very negative drug stigma attached to rave culture. Unfortunately, people make judgments, so I avoid discussing it or bringing that kind of attention to myself. Raving has really become an escape or release for me when I am able to participate. There just isn’t anything like music pumping through speakers and dancing with a group of people. Life is just really good. In the words of Showtek from FTS, “This is what I love and can’t stop loving.”

What do you like to do outside of dance music?
Work keeps me pretty busy. I have tons of projects I’ve had to put on the back burner. I’m usually paying bills, hitting the gym, and doing routine maintenance on all aspects of my life. I like to read, make art, paint, and travel when I can.
