Labeled as nothing less than a genius by Mixmag, EDX has the same enthusiasm for the DJ game as he did when his career began more than 20 years ago.

The Switzerland/Miami-based DJ born Maurizio Colella first gained traction in 1994 when his celebrated mix tapes circulated the globe. Next came remixes for artists including deadmau5, Mary J. Blige, Roger Sanchez, and Lauryn Hill. His “No Xcuses” podcast airs on SIRIUS XM’s Electric Area Channel and features everything from deep house to U.K. garage to electro.

EDX plays Exchange L.A. tonight. We emailed him some questions about his career, and he sent us some answers back.

You’ve been DJing for a long time. What’s one current trend you wouldn’t have predicted when you started out?
I always knew there was going to be a huge revival of the rave generation, but I never thought it would start in the U.S. Insomniac really helped this culture return and it is great to see people championing rave, peace and unity! Musically, it’s so great to see the U.K. speed garage sound make a comeback now, this time mixed in with the electro sound from a few years ago.

Your “No Xcuses” podcasts run the gamut in terms of covering genres. What’s your strategy when curating these mixes?
In general, it’s music that makes me happy and that I believe can reach an audience that appreciates great music. I always try different angles and keep my musical range very large. A weekly show is one of the best things that has happened to me, because it makes me seek out new music every single week. It puts into focus that music is very fulfilling to me. In sum, I am happy about “No Xcuses,” because at the end of the day, it’s all about good music.

Tell us about your “Indian Summer” remix of Above & Beyond’s “Blue Sky Action.” What was your approach in transforming the track into something of your own?
I’ve done three “Indian Summer” remixes, and each one is about capturing that warm feeling in someone’s heart. When I worked on the most recent one, I felt that again. My previous remixes for Armin van Buuren’s “Sound Of Good Bye” and Chris Reece’s “Back Again” had that exact same feeling, and all the deep progressive fans love that sound!

You play Exchange LA tonight. What’s one feeling you want every clubber to leave with after your set?
The EDX sound is all about making people smile. The Exchange LA crowd includes very high-end music lovers who make me put even more effort into making this journey unforgettable. I’m really looking forward to playing as many tracks from my personal basket as possible. L.A. has always treated me well and it always makes me feel at home; I can’t wait for my return.

EDX performs at Awakening Fridays tonight (October 10) at Exchange LA in Downtown Los Angeles. Tickets are available now.
