Get Lost and Enlightened in ‘Amaze’
Sometimes, you really need to lose yourself to find yourself. Architect and visual artist Marcos Zotes took that idea and turned it into Amaze, an art installation that looks a little something like a mini stage at EDC.
Built on a city block in Toronto, this maze consists of scaffolding blocks covered by translucent fabric. The kaleidoscopic colors projected onto the structure’s surfaces both disorient and enlighten people who walk through it. If it sounds like a paradox, don’t be alarmed—that’s the way Zotes intended it.
As people try to maneuver their way through Amaze, they become part of it. It’s all part of Zotes’ mission to get people to question their relationships with the city and really become part of their surroundings. “I learned that the urban environment could be experienced beyond the limitations of its intended purpose,” Zotes tells the Creators Project. “The entire city became a playground, an environment to be colonized through a creative process. Today, my work as an architect continues to follow this approach.”
