From: The City of Angels, with all its rippling, frisky, ample character.

The crew: Established in 2013 by Tim “Ruff” Hauser, Brandon “Brainchild” Elliot, and Roy Wilkins, Cats & Boots Records provided a platform beyond the decks. The DJs and producers have a long history with EDC, with members working as site operations for many years and watching the scene flourish while playing side stages, pop-ups and takeovers. The label was an organic extension, an opportunity for several friends to push things forward.

When & where: Catch the Cats & Boots crew on the Boombox Art Car.

Why you should care: Because you respond to groove at the cellular level and you want to dance to sets that sequence the mosaic of house music’s DNA into a monumental genome. With drippin’ rhythm as the X-gene, Cats & Boots can trigger the manifestation of a crowd’s mutant power: the ability to absorb bassbin frequencies and transform them into continuous, infectious movement.

For fans of: Bass house, 2-step, booty tech, 4×4 funk, and low-end’s visceral intangibles. With an ingrained love of ’90s UK garage—as well as an appreciation for the tenets of techno, tech-house, deep house, drum & bass and breakbeat—Cats & Boots does its duty to move that booty. Ruff Hauser shouts out love for billed EDC Las Vegas performers including Sacha Robotti, Will Clarke, Born Dirty, Maximono and Low Steppa, while throwing support behind producers that will bring the vibe to the Boombox Art Car alongside the label founders, including Afrodisiac, Moni, Hotfire, Rybo, Johnny Darko, Mscls, Wood Holly, Thomas Garcia and more.

Sounds like: The essence of an outlaw rave wrapped in sea smoke and tectonic bass, but without the need for map points and shuttle buses. “I just remember being whisked away from some punk show in the ’90s to a rave in the mountains of Malibu,” says Hauser. “There were no mosh pits, or fights, or people trying to be hard. The beat and the vibe said we could get past our differences and find amazing new connections and friends on the dancefloor.” Cats & Boots looks to provide a similarly communal catalyst through fierce tracks for grindin’ them hips, giveaways, and throwing down the checkered board for B-boy battles.

Take a spin: Compiled in the studio, label manager Ruff Hauser has used the Cats & Boots Records mix as an opportunity to showcase some of his unreleased originals and remixes, as well as collaborators who draw on fleshly shuffle and warped vocal hooks to build unsuppressed energy. “In my music, I am constantly trying to make the dancefloor react,” says Hauser. “If I can get someone to get into motion to unleash that same spirit I have felt many times on the floor, then it is truly rewarding.”

EDC Las Vegas 2017 takes place Friday, June 16, through Sunday, June 18, at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Tickets are available now. For more information, visit the official website.
