New York’s Westend is a producer with a solid reputation. Everyone from Audiophile XXL to Dirtybird have championed his tracks, along with many prominent DJs. Always seeking out new ways to craft dance music, he keeps a steady output of house with a robust bottom-end. So, it should come as no surprise that Westend is back to drop a solid three-track EP, Party Time, on Box of Cats.

While the title track is a big-energy number, one of the other two, “Thinking Bout You,” is a distinct shift in another direction. The skeleton stays true to traditional tech house, but the body that wraps around it is emotive and complex. This one goes deep and punctuates with sporadic stabs and blips that keep the energy steady. But its main identity is that of a misty, emotive afters tune. Carried aloft by sadly soulful female vocals and mesmerizing arpeggiations, “Thinking Bout You” is as strong as it is compelling.

It’s all of the well-thought-out, subtle touches that make this a standout track, with Westend letting little bits speak volumes around wide swaths of space. Though certainly energetic, this one calls out a deep connection with the listener instead of leaning on big energy to grab hold. Chances are, this will be the sleeper hit of an already solid EP.

Available December 6 via Box of Cats.
