Longtime powerhouses Vibe Killers have had quite a busy time lately, vowing to push things even further with not only a new track, but an entirely new label. Under the name Star Cycling Club, this new venture exists solely to release original Vibe Killers material with unfettered freedom.

“We’ve always felt that as an artist, managing your release schedule properly is really important. We work with a lot of amazing labels who have signed our music and supported our sound, and we will continue to do so. But every so often, we make a track that we feel just needs to be put out there on our terms; Star Cycling Club is the platform for us to do that,” Vibe Killers tell Insomniac. “We’ve been involved in running and setting up several labels in the past—including Killer Vibes, which has seen a lot of success over the years—but Star Cycling Club is going to be purely for our own original productions, so the sound and style is pretty clear-cut from the off.”

Hitting the ground running, this endeavor sets the tone of what’s to come with a fiery new track: “Favelas,” a wicked four-on-the-floor chunk of thumping tech house. Locking in with a punchy beat, the rhythms grind in frozen time, creating a robotic hypnotism that abruptly breaks into Portuguese vocal samples. Ringing laughter brings the lead, which is actually a funk-filled bassline. Vibe Killers keep “Favelas” warehouse-ready deep, while packing in enough grooves to fill a dancefloor.

The touches here are all simple and to the point. Minimal beats bounce in and out, rising and crashing at just the right moments. Energy multiplies through builds and drops, and moments linger for just the right length. The laid-back style belies the amount of effort and talent it takes to create a tune this effectively subtle. Made by people who have clearly spent many long hours on the decks, “Favelas” is a fantastic start that should leave fans only wanting more.

“‘Favelas’ is a pretty good indication of what you can expect from the label and from any Vibe Killers show: groove, bass, and a tasty vocal, which takes it to the next level,” they add. “The support has been amazing, with everyone from Latmun and Gorgon City to Riva Starr and Leftwing & Kody supporting so far. We’re aiming to set the bar high with the first release, and there’s plenty more to come later this year, too.”

Available February 2 via Star Cycling Club.
