Rucks “Whatever”

At the tail-end of last year, newcomer Rucks bursted out in full momentum through a defiant debut EP on SoSure Music. The London-based fledgling has wasted no time to turn in his follow-up, with three new joints on deck for the UK imprint due out next week. His forthcoming EP Whatever is a fresh, club-pullulating pack of heat with its sights locked on low-end-loving house heads.

Insomniac is excited to host the exclusive first play of the title cut, which sees the auspicious act in his finest mode yet. Bass-heavy and extra saucy, this four-floor workout uses shuffling percs, cambering pads and ricocheting basslines in all the right measures. Only a few releases deep, and Rucks is already hitting his mark like a seasoned vet would.

Were you impulsive on this track, or did you have a sketch in mind before you started?
Yeah, I’m always impulsive; if I’m feeling something at the mo, that’s what it is. I never sit down with an idea, really. It’s strictly vibes—like if I’m angry, I’ll write something angry, or if it’s dark, I’ll write something dark. I just sit down with some samples and let them take me on a journey.

Describe the best setting/activity to hear this track.
It’s blatantly best heard in the club, man. On a real level, you definitely ain’t getting that heavy sub bass I put in if you’re listening on some ear buds or something. It’s gotta be played loud to where you feel the bass in your stomach, like brown-note vibes.

What’s the takeaway here? Is there a message or vibe you hope to get across to listeners?
Yeah, for sure, like do whatever you want, have a good time and don’t let anything bother you. This is about one thing: raving. Just be out there feeling the bass and the vibes in it.

Creatively, how did the work on this track stack up to previous studio sessions? Was this more challenging to complete than others?
I think all my tracks are pretty even… I just let it all flow out. But this one did come out fast, ‘cause I just wanted to get that dirty club vibe out, and it came together easy. I love the old-school drum & bass vibes, but I also love dark garage and house vibes, so when I’m on that level, I find it all comes together pretty quickly.

If this song were a color, what color would it be?
Probably black. Though I guess black ain’t really a color, is it? So probably like more of a dark red. Yeah, like a deep, dark red.
