PROST “What I Have”
Arriving today on your figurative doorstep is a brand-new joint from a brand-new project by the name of PROST. The pairing of two friends from Los Angeles sees the counterparts bring both male and female dynamics to the table, while mashing together their French and American cultures, respectively. It works so well. Currently making the rounds at WMC, they’ve dropped off the lead single from their forthcoming Prostitution LP, which is due out in fall 2015.
PROST’s “What I Have” is a languid shaker that calls out the competition. It wields lilting pads and drab chords that work in tandem to usher in a dark and resilient atmosphere. Enthralling and broody, on-point vocal harmonizing is propped against delicate drum work and moody basslines. It’ll drive you to the edge—and by that, I mean the edge of discerning dancefloors.
Available March 31 via Prostitution International Sound/Le Branché Records.
If you were to describe this track as a scent—a signature fragrance, as it were—what would it be called, and what would its tagline be?
If “What I Have” were translated into a scent, it would definitely be a savant mélange of patchouli, amber, musk and sultry lotus wood with a hint of vanilla. The fragrance of these ingredients radiates class, sexiness and mystery. The scent would be hypnotic and modern, yet timeless. It would be called Black Noise—a scent for the bold minimalist.
Were you impulsive on this track, or did you have a sketch in mind before you started?
Most, if not all, of our music is impulsive and inspired by our daily ritual of discussion: successes, failures, happiness, frustrations of the day, hour, minute. You know, life. We don’t dive into the music before we know what page the other is on. We are not session musicians on the clock, we are friends that love to create together and inspire each other to create with open minds. Our moods and emotions directly affect the music we create. Nothing is premeditated. One note leads to the next, one word to the next, and before we know it, the song reveals itself—the art of “mastering the accident,” as we like to say.
Was there one particular moment in the recording or mixing process of this track that made you feel as though you were creating something pretty damn special?
We knew before the song was even completed that we had something special on our hands. Usually, with one glance, we can tell if the other is excited about a song. Without even saying a word, we could tell that “What I Have” was unique. Our passion for our craft is so sincere that we can’t keep our composure when we get stoked about something.
What’s the takeaway here? Is there a message or vibe you hope to get across to listeners?
People hear music in different ways. While some focus on the music and melodies, others want to be told a story. We want to offer the listener something special in every layer of our music. The dark and hypnotic music of “What I Have” really sets the tone for something to be said, and what is said can in turn be visualized. Our music sets the tone for celebration of consciousness through dance and is done with purpose—similar to that of ancient or religious rituals, where people used dance to celebrate life, death, sadness, happiness and awakening.
How does this production reflect your personality/ethos?
This production reflects PROST as one entity: two people from two entirely different cultures, French and American, who have come together to share the same vision, sharing our thoughts with a minimalist approach that is soulful, raw, dark, visual and hypnotic.
