It’s been a long time coming for Nick Wisdom to step out into his own with a solo release on the Bastard Jazz imprint he heads up—but that day is just about here already. The smooth operator from Vancouver has remained steadily on our radar from his work as one-half of Potatohead People, while also having his hands on the boards for names like Illa J, Kaytranada, Phife Dawg, and more. His beats have always been known to run the gamut from left-of-center disco, fever-inducing house, and modern-facing hip-hop. On his label debut, Intimate Strangers, he runs a thread through the fabric of all these influences that clearly informed the four featured cuts on the EP.

“Feelin’ Alright” is the second offering on the release, and Wisdom has wisely tapped HW&W–featured vocalist Reva Devito to breathe beauty all over this disco-rubbed number.

“I wanted to do a disco-influenced house song with a funky bassline and smooth female vocals,” Wisdom tells Insomniac. “We were into Reva’s work with B. Bravo on Bastard Jazz, and past stuff with Kaytra—so we got in touch, and she was into it. I guess it’s kind of a mixing pot of everything I’ve been listening to lately. Voila!”

Devito’s delivery on its own is nothing short of intoxicating, but Wisdom takes things to an entirely new playing field with the beat he wraps around it. A delicate but immensely solid rhythm holds everything together, as woozy synthlines, funk-tinged guitar riffs, and body-caressing chords are arranged in a way that make you feel it where the magic happens.

Available September 15 via Bastard Jazz.
