In a day and age when most every DJ isn’t up to the task of hauling crates around from gig to gig, Mihalis Safras is breaking his back as someone who’s deeply invested in the vinyl-only ideology. He’s a rare breed, no doubt, but the Material series cofounder has a lot more to offer than just being one of the few wax purists left standing. He’s also at the top of his game on the tech house front, armed with a number of dancefloor weapons he’s fired off on Relief, Truesoul, Cajual and more. He’s got another heavy assault EP in the cannon with Raygun Rave, his four-track debut on the untouchable Hot Creations imprint.

It’s the title cut where all the action happens. Safras delivers an old-school aesthetic on this heavy roller, except nothing else about it seems stuck in the past. Pumping drums keep the whole affair in check, while rumbling basslines, choppy vocal loops, and hotshot rave stabs are strung together in a way that’ll have you reaching for the roof until the very last beat hits.

“‘Raygun Rave’ is about returning to the ‘90s, where NRG and Acen are punching some rave themes,” Safras tells Insomniac. “This was the idea behind that release—rave is here.”

Available July 21 via Hot Creations.
