Firing off a two-track salute to the ‘90s on the Swiss-based Hive Audio imprint, Kotelett & Zadak break out the heat through their forthcoming Secret Police EP. With the digital release set for early March, the Berlin-based comrades hit their mark with an authoritative chunk of club spunk. A noble nod to old-school electro and disco, the title cut can shake down any dancefloor it comes across. Built atop busy, bubbly percussive work and a domineering bassline, choppy vocal samples chase down shimmery synth lines—while the duo tactfully throws in the ubiquitous siren sample for good measure. There’s no use attempting to escape this one, because “Secret Police” will get you every time. It never fails.

Available March 2 via Hive Audio.

Were you impulsive on this track, or did you have a sketch in mind before you started?
There was no sketch in mind for “Secret Police.” We just started a jam, and there was this bit—a cheap voice element—which we were laughing at. But then hyperactive percussion moves up, and suddenly we were standing and moving our hips. From this moment, we didn’t have to talk; the direction was absolutely clear.

What’s the takeaway here? Is there a message or vibe you hope to get across to listeners?
It has these ‘90s vibes in its bones—especially with the synth and the voice. And the message is the message.

Have you played this one out in any of your sets?
Yes, we play it often, and it always energizes the crowd with a positive vibe on the floor.

What’s your favorite sound/synth/effect/etc. used here?
There is absolutely a favorite sound: the synth chord, which smashes in sometimes. Every time, it gives us the feeling we’re getting beamed to another dimension that’s warm and colorful.

If this song were a color, what color would it be?
A double rainbow.
