Moving up in the artistic realm requires tremendous amounts of hard work and discipline. Scottish producer Theo Kottis doesn’t seem to have an issue with keeping his eye on the prize, based on his recent track record—which includes record deals with Anjunadeep, Moda Black, and Last Night on Earth, to name but a few. He’s been hitting deep strides in the dance music space over the last couple of years, and the same can be said about his workout routine.

Kottis is a deeply committed runner. Whether he’s living on the road or enjoying quality time at home, he doesn’t budge on maintaining a steady 40-km-per-week average (that’s roughly 25 miles, for all you metric system illiterates). And since music is such a huge part of his life, we know he’s sitting on a goldmine of tracks that will help you keep your head in the game when your legs start to feel like jello.

How many times per week do you normally get a good run in?
I try and run at least four times a week.

Are you a treadmill or outdoor runner?
Open-air. I love exploring new cities when I am touring, and running is great for that.

On average, what distance do you normally reach?
Fifteen kilometers.

What’s your favorite time of day to sneak in a run sesh?
If I’m at home working in the studio, I love going around 5pm. I can listen to the work I produced that day and get more inspired. If I’m on the road, first thing in the morning.

Are you a solo or partner/group type of runner?
Solo.

Do you think speed or stamina is more important?
For me it’s stamina, as I enjoy long-distance running. Speed training is better for losing that beer belly, though!

Does being on tour get in the way of your normal running routine?
Sometimes it can be difficult to find time, but I always feel so much better after a run, so it’s good to force myself to get out.

When was the last time you ran until your legs almost gave out? What made you push yourself to the limits?
A few weeks ago, I ran around 25 km. I’m always motivated to beat my last run time.

Where are some of your favorite spots to run? What makes them so special?
I live in Edinburgh. It’s a very beautiful city. Any route you take is special, especially around Arthur’s Seat. The view is breathtaking.

Which of your own tracks do you think is best suited for a sprint?
“If I Ever Feel Better,” as I can daydream away and not think about the activity.

Tell us about a few of the tracks you’ve included in your list and why they make sense here.
Like I said, I like dreamy tracks, as they make you not think about the activity. Also, [I included] some heavier tracks in here to get you going when your legs start giving in!
