Crosstown Rebels goes to Emerald City on Russ Yallop’s remix of “In This Moment” by L.A.’s electro soul man, SPNCR. Featuring a few bars by a fellow Angeleno, rapper Lorde Sanctus, the original song radiates a pop, French touch vibe with a funky guitar lick, seesaw melody, and swinging beat.

“I wrote this song five years ago, and didn’t know if I would ever play it for people,” states SPNCR, who previously sang on “Living in the City” by Lee Foss and Lee Curtis.

On his remix, however, London’s Yallop goes for a wigged-out tech house mix, featuring bits and pieces of the vocal and rap, warm keyboard touches, effusive synths, and filtered, wistful guitar licks. It’s almost unrecognizable from the original, which threw Yallop for a loop when he got his hands on it.

“I actually went back to Leon, the label manager, and asked if there was a B-side I could rework, as the A-side is kind of a tricky customer,” he recalls. After basically being told to “quit bitchin’, step up, or go home,” Yallop did just that and sat with the track for hours until he found a way in.

“I loved the chord progression, so once I had that, it all fell into place, really,” he says. “The chords are super blissful, so I thought I’d use them as relief for some crazy synth wildness. Chopped up the rap and nailed a driving b-line, and voila.”

“In This Moment” hits stores tomorrow, marking SPNCR’s debut for Jamie Jones and Lee Foss’ Emerald City label.

Available April 20 via Emerald City.
