New York’s home for house heads, Soup NYC, is back with another powerhouse release. This round sees Devon James and Ant LaRock dropping a funky house number titled “Ghetto Style,” which calls on some serious remix duties from Junior Sanchez and Eyes Everywhere. And while the former goes into an almost big-room, disco-y flavor, the latter dives straight into a gritty techno lean.
Eyes Everywhere puts hard work into taking “Ghetto Style” to a different place entirely. The tempo is boosted up, driven by a techno kick/hat combo and sewn together by jagged electro. The Buffalo duo rivets driving, arpeggiated synths and stabs into the mix, giving it a pulsing energy. The original spirit of the deep, percussive-filled groove can still be found here, but it’s been outfitted with the visions of an android’s fever dream.
Upbeat, amped and hard-driving, this remix still never goes flat. Bursts of rises and drops punctuate a tightly knit dynamic that gives just as much space and time to low, hushed moments as it does to eruptive highs. Ultimately, it’s a very versatile track that is sure to get “Ghetto Style” out to new audiences.
“This remix started with a stretched-out vocal and a sort of acid bassline that evolved into a new sound for us, drawing on old influences like trance, electro, and Detroit techno,” Eyes Everywhere tells us. “This is a very different track for us that let us experiment with new sounds, but still mixes into our normal tech house quite well, especially for peak-hour sets. We’ve known Devon since our college years in Upstate New York, and it’s been amazing to work with him over the years on both shows and music. The chance to release on the esteemed NYC imprint Soup was a no-brainer.”
