From: Straight outta Westwood in Los Angeles. Unimpressed with UCLA ragers and college bars, Brownies and Lemonade founders Kush Fernando and Jose Guzman began throwing parties in their apartment when they were students. After they graduated, the pair kept the spirit of intimate gatherings in increasingly larger venues around L.A., treating the events as chances to play new favorites to friends by supporting hometown talent and up-and-coming SoundCloud producers, instead of booking solely marquee names (though there have been plenty of those, too).

The crew: The Brownies and Lemonade squad of event producers and DJs includes Gojira, Covntry Clvb and Fernet, who anchor events that draw in creators and crowds ready to body rock. “The name represents the diversity of our crowd, the people behind it, the people we book,” says Chad Kenney, aka Gojira. “It’s the intersection of all the things L.A. embodies better than most, if not all cities in the US. We want Brownies and Lemonade to be a springboard for artists where they can showcase their individuality, their music, their art.”

When & where: Friday, June 16, on the Parliament Art Car.

Why you should care: Because this is a posse that’s constantly makin’ moves and keepin’ you on your toes, and you want to hear the next big thing—the intense and the intricate, some freq-y funk and the dirt between the drums. “A lot of people understand the trajectory of what we’re trying to do and are excited about the opportunities of giving back to the fans in an intimate capacity, so B&L is always full of surprises,” says Kenney.

For fans of: Kendrick Lamar and Mura Masa. RL Grime and A$AP Ferg. On the EDC Las Vegas grounds, Brownies and Lemonade has ties to artists including Louis the Child, Alison Wonderland, San Holo, Datsik, Trippy Turtle, GTA and Quix—just some of the acts who have brought huge talent to smaller rooms. “I think that everyone loves to be part of something that is completely organic and true to the core philosophy of music that is authentic, no matter what genre it is,” says Kenney.

Sounds like: The center of a Venn diagram where electronic and hip-hop circles overlap. Trap, future bass, chromatic progressions, dank melodies, wavy beats, and Southern California G-funk are just some of the elements in that set. If you like Baauer, Diplo and Porter Robinson, or Gucci Mane, Fetty Wap, Eazy-E and DJ Quik, you’ll enjoy how they thread together in Brownies and Lemonade’s fluid microcosm (which will have surprise guests and a visual package, as well).

Take a spin: Helming this amalgam are the B&L All-Stars, who bring together a celebration of uptempo tech-funk, classic hip-hop, and filter-pinched bangers. “We all come from an open-format background, so we brought that idea to a mix that’s high on energy,” says Kenney.
