Ben Dorman is Bijou, the roughneck G-house guru who doesn’t know how to lose!

According to the Oxford English Dictionary:

Bijou (ˈbēZHo͞o)
Adjective, British: small and elegant.
Noun, archaic: a jewel or trinket.

It’s up to you if the name fits the product. This nickname-cum-DJ tag was laid on Dorman by his brother back in ‘09, the original intent now obscured by the clouds of time. Does it describe his sound? Yes and no. If only speculating via the titles of his most circulated tracks, “Get Up” and “1000 Bitches,” one would guess no. Or if considering the wundercuts included in the exclusive EDC Las Vegas mix above—like Ricci’s “Boom” and “Salad Dressing,” the cross-slashed bass murderfest via Borgore, and the blast-furnace drops on “Crowd Control”—one would continue to hold with “no.”

But listen closer.

The gem-cutter in Bijou comes out in dark and intricate twists, the fine cut-ups and close-riding sound production all his own. Reference “Throw It Up” and the Insomniac Records–issued “Revelation” with longtime collaborator Dr. Fresch, as they suggest a skilled, robotic craftsman working out the fine details behind the production curtain of big, gangsta-leaning sound. And his recent release “G-Code,” as the title suggests, is his own ode to the G-house subgenre.

“G-code, for me, comes from the streets and is how one conducts themselves in their everyday lives, while staying true to themselves and where they come from,” confides Bijou. “It’s more in the realm of hip-hop, but with my music being so heavily influenced by that, it’s a common thing and is something that I have personally experienced.”

Straight outta the streets of Arizona, where he played out relentlessly, Dorman’s signature brand of finely tuned, hood-ready clangers has allowed him to widen his circles away from his home scene via collaborations with Denzel Curry, GERM, Judge, and Kaleena Zanders. In turn, bloodying the ears (in a good way) of full-cred imprints like Fool’s Gold, Homerun House, and Dim Mak, Bijou released a torrent of significant and undeniably consistent nerve-janglers.

For any up-and-comer, stepping into the ranks of the above talent and labels is never not going to be a moment. “Working with Dim Mak has been great. They’re easy to work with and were super responsive throughout the process of ‘Gotta Shine,’” he says. The result is a pleasing ear-spanker featuring the inimitable Germ AND included above for your listening pleasure.

There’s a lot packed into this mix: Migos’ superlative “Too Hotty,” KOOS’ definitive “Reaper,” Bijou’s own “Death Wish” counterweighted by Jordan Burns’ “Weekend”—more than one can mention in the space provided. Unlike a lot of others, this mix has a good ratio of tracks that are either Bijou-original or with the Southwesterner as revisioner/remixer.

So, bust out your headphones, and remember: It’s not all about the break—though it’ll raise your hands every time—it’s the fuzz, flange, and fangle. It’s the designed details and textures between the drops where you’ll find the Bijou.

In every track.

And after listening, you have my word that you’ll need no further urging to get to EDC Las Vegas next month and catch his textured detonations at stereoBLOOM, hosted by Insomniac Records.
