We honestly don’t have much time for hobbies because of our day jobs. On our free time we usually work on tunes, we play a lot of NBA 2K13. Richard tends to clown around and talk shit for days. We like going out to shows and checking out different artists. When it comes to music as our main hobby and our relationship we genuinely appreciate it every way. Whether it’s an orchestral CD to effects from an action movie.

Interview

Home Town: Orange County, CA
Currently Living: Orange County, CA
Origin Of Name: We started off as friends and called our group SF, which stands for stay family and has many other meanings. When we started making music we came up with numerous funky names but we ended up spelling out the letters SF .
Weapon of Choice: We use Logic Pro for producing and four CDJs, a mixer, two mics and a dope sound system for our DJ purposes.
Source of Power: The four of us all have many different influences but just to name a few, Big Sean, UZ, Flosstradamus, A$ap Mob, Danny Brown, Skywlkr, Pharell, Diplo

Was there one particular moment in the recording or mixing process for your Discovery Project entry that made you feel like you were creating something pretty damn special?
The moment that we finished our mix we sat back and listened to it, we all kind of looked at each other in agreement that this mix would give The Esseph name a good rep.

What do your parents think of what you are doing?
They asked us to get day jobs, so we did, lol. But at the end of the day our parents are really supportive and they want to see us succeed.

What’s the strangest part of your job?
We love being in new places but hate dealing with airports.

Tell me about your most memorable night out as an artist or as a fan.
EDC Orlando 2012, we were on stage just having the time of our lives and realizing that our long hours and hard work seemed to be paying off.

What is your ultimate career dream?
Working with major influences.

Are you impulsive with your work or do you have a sketch in mind before you start?
The majority of it just comes from the moment we start and it we try to make it flow. Although on some occasions we do a bit of brainstorming and put it towards our work.

How, if at all, does listening to music figure into your creative process?
Definitely, it gives us more of a drive to step up our game in the studio. The last song that made me drop what I was doing and do into the studio was probably Digi G’ Alessio “SSTIAAH”

What’s the most important piece of gear in your studio?
Logic Pro, it’s how where most of the magic happens.

Do you have a list of people you’d like to collaborate with in the future?
Diplo, he’s been a major influence in our work. Big Sean, he’s one of the most intelligent rappers in the game lyrically.

If we pressed Shuffle on your iPod while you went to the bathroom, what would you be embarrassed to come back to us listening to?
Ha-ha there are many things in our iPods that a grown man shouldn’t be listening to. It’s mainly hip-hop, dubstep, and trap but I wouldn’t be ashamed if I came in and Marvin Gaye was playing.

What should everyone just shut the fuck up about?
Dubstep being dead.

What gets you excited when you think about the future of electronic music and club culture?
What excites us is mainly how it evolves and it can change in many ways, good and bad. Hopefully DJs can put more than a few genres into their sets.

When you look at electronic music and the surrounding culture, what worries you about the future?
We hope people would go to events for the artists and not just use it as a place to get wasted and take drugs.

What do you remember about your first DJ gig?
We walked in a bit timid but we killed it and brought in a crowned and we knew we could be something special.

Do you have a favorite all-time mixed CD or series?
Diplo’s mix for Sway In The Morning. It was released about eight months ago, he absolutely murdered it!

What advice would you offer someone thinking about entering the Discovery Project competition?
Try to get yourself out there, give it your best. Don’t be a half ass and if you don’t win don’t worry about it. Just keep moving forward and try out for the next opportunity.
