Music is just as important as any other part of our lives. It enforces memories, makes you think, helps you cope, and makes life just a little more real and vivid. It ties you to people, compliments your identity, and is a huge part (in general) of what makes us human. Someone without music in their life is not getting the full spectrum of what it has to offer. Both of us in City 17 feel like music easily takes us to another place, whether it’s new or nostalgic. It’s the reason why we do this is the first place.

Interview

Home Town: Justin Anderson (Seattle) Felipe Pereira (Los Angeles)
Currently Living: Justin lives in Seattle and Felipe lives in LA
Origin Of Name: The name City 17 is a fictional city in a PC game, but whether or not you know where the name came from, it makes you think of something big and iconic. In general, we have both been passionate about games and the journey they take you on, and this name was a good way to convey how our music makes us feel.
Weapon of Choice: Mac
Source of Power: Feedback, a receptive crowd, Pendulum, the ‘80s, video games.

What’s the strangest part of your job?
The distance between working alone in the studio, to playing that song in front of thousands of people is incredibly small. There are so many opportunities that could take you from being a bedroom producer to a big name DJ. Although that wasn’t quite the case for us, there have been a lot of amazing opportunities that we weren’t expecting.

Do you have a list of people you’d like to collaborate with in the future?
Pegboard Nerds, Kid Panel, Savant and Krewella are just a few of the producers that we would love to someday work with. They all have incredible detail, consistent momentum and energy, and amazing melodies, which is something we really strive for when producing our own tracks. So being able to sit down and work next to anyone that we feel like we can relate to musically would be awesome.

What do you remember about your first DJ gig?
The room was empty, but we had a fucking blast regardless.

Tell me about your most memorable night out.
The first contest we won was for Lights All Night to perform on New Years Eve. That weekend was literal non-stop fun and the event staff treated us like family or even royalty at some points. On top of that we became really good friends with an awesome group called At Dawn We Rage, got to hang out with 12th Planet, Mord Fustang, Alvin Risk and quite a few more. Being surrounded and welcomed by people we’ve looked up to and been inspired by for so long, was easily the best way to bring in the New Year.

What advice would you offer someone thinking about entering the Discovery Project competition?
Make sure you’re well rounded as an engineer and as a musician before you put yourself out there. As modern producers we have to put on a lot of hats and make sure you’re good at every aspect of being a producer/DJ.
