From his early days in Phuture, to his time at Strictly Rhythm, and his work for Bangalter’s Roulé label—among many, many, many others—Chicago’s Roy Davis Jr. has brought us some of the deepest, most soulful house music in the culture’s history. Gradually, Davis finessed his acid house roots into funky classics, including 1996’s “Gabriel” with Peven Everett, which was recently covered by Sampha, testifying to Davis’ impact across generations.

His latest rework is Lafa Taylor and Aabo’s “Already Found.” The duo’s blending of hip-hop and house fits right in Davis’ wheelhouse, and he flips the funky original into a euphoric summer jam with shimmering keys, silky horns, a sweet-spot tempo, an uplifting message (“being content in the moment”), and a catchy hook (“I can be you, you can be me”).

“I can remember the first time I was introduced to Roy’s music,” Taylor recalls. “I was at an epic outdoor rave in Oregon, the sun was coming up, and the last DJ was playing the last song of the night. It was ‘Gabriel’—such a beautiful way to end the night and start the day. I will never forget it.”

“‘Gabriel’ was a big inspiration to add horns to some of our songs on our forthcoming album,” adds Aabo.

If this doesn’t move the crowd at your next summer shindig, you need new friends.

Available June 30 via Mixto Music.
