Returning Headliners are well versed in the kandi trading culture and all things PLUR. With many surprises around every corner at EDC Las Vegas, a little extra random happiness doesn’t hurt. Meet Robbie Walter, an 18-year-old from Colorado celebrating his first EDC. Robbie is on a mission to bring smiles to random strangers by handing out 200 wooden clothespins emblazoned with handwritten messages of positivity and responsibility. We chilled with Robbie at the Buddha Garden at EDC to learn more about his PLUR journey.

How long have you been a part of the electronic music culture?
For about five years.

What prompted you to make the pilgrimage to EDC this year?
I turned 18!

What inspired you to create the rave pins?
This is the first time I’ve done this. I was actually on EDC’s subreddit, and someone posted a picture [of clothespins with messages]. I wanted to find out who, but they deleted it. I though it was a cool idea and I’d make some and give them to my friends. It’s like kandi, but a new surprise. I think it’s an interesting take on spreading kindness, and I thought it was really fun.

What are some of the messages that you’re sharing?
Some of them were more beneficial to people, like “Stay hydrated,” “Drink water,” “If you partake, be safe.” Also, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” “Spread the Love,” Spread Kindness,” “Smile,” and just other good vibes.

Where have you been sharing the pins?
A lot on wires, in the tress, on tents, on people’s backpacks.

Do they notice you’re doing that?
No. I don’t want them to see me, because I want it to be like they get a fun little surprise.

How many rave pins did you make?
I made around 200, but I underestimated how big EDC was. I thought, “200 will be enough.” Then I got here and was like, “Hell, no.” It was not nearly enough.

Are you at EDC by yourself?
I traveled here by myself, but I’m meeting some concert friends here. Friday, I just stayed by myself and met new people, and it was fun.

What were your first impressions of EDC?
I first walked in, and it was magical and surreal that I was here. The whole night, I was just in shock. There are so many stimulating things—lights, sounds—and it’s so much different than my usual concert at Red Rocks. It’s amazing.

Who are some of the artists you were most excited to see?
I really wanted to see Dada Life, Bassnectar, TOKiMONSTA and Flume.

What was your first introduction into electronic music?
This kid from my middle school in eighth grade was taking about his favorite musician, deadmau5. I had no idea who he was. He showed me a couple of his songs, and I was like, “This is really weird; I don’t understand it.” After a week of constantly listening to it, I got a feel for it, and from there it took off.
