10 Electronic Must-Grabs for Record Store Day 2015
It’s almost Saturday, April 18. Do you know where your money is going?
We’re talking about Record Store Day 2015, the one day of the year musicians unload their rarest, most exclusive, and most desirable musical goodies. This year’s crop offers a lot of different flavors for the electronic music lover in your family. Here are some of our favorite picks.
Adonis – “No Way Back” (Azari & III / Mixhell Covers)
The 1988 house classic gets turned on its head in two deliciously daring ways. If you’ve been to the club in the last few months, the chance you’ve heard one of these two covers is damn near absolute. Grab the official release while you can.
Damian Lazarus & the Ancient Moons – “Vermillion”
The Crosstown Rebels maestro and avid hat-lover has always been an underground favorite, but his latest venture as band leader for the Ancient Moons is turning him into a superstar. Check out the lead single off the debut album.
Amon Tobin – Dark Jovian
Amon Tobin is one of the coolest live performers you can ever see, but you don’t have to wait until he makes a rare appearance to enjoy his interstellar mood music. Hop on your favorite spacecraft and meander the universe while rockin’ out to his latest EP.
Various Artists – Drum n Bass Arena 2015
Looking for something to get your blood flowing? Try this double-decker on for size. Two 12-inch records pack four sides and 12 tracks of absolute, brain-mashing terror. Use bass levels responsibly.
The Prodigy – “Ibiza”
Ask your favorite DJ or producer what artist inspired them to get into dance music, and 85 percent of the time, the Prodigy is the catalyst. If by some anti-miracle you’ve never heard of the London group, listen to Fat of the Land. And even if you have, grab this collaboration with Sleaford Mods.
Donna Summer – “Another Place and Time” UK Singles
Speaking of legends, Donna Summer is one of disco’s, and therefore dance music’s, biggest stars. She was Giorgio Moroder’s muse. She’s the original queen of the “Bad Girls.” Any chance you have to grab her music on wax, you take it.
Happy Mondays – Pills, Thrills, and Bellyaches
Before EDM, a crazy collective of bands in Manchester, England, was just killing it. Punk rock blended with the dancefloor to teach a whole generation how to PLUR. Happy Mondays was a leader of that movement, and this is the band’s third album.
Gorgon City – Sirens (Remixes)
This danceable duo was one of 2014’s biggest breakout hits, and last year’s Sirens was one of the best albums of the year. Tracks like “Ready for Your Love” and “Go All Night” have been tearing up the charts, so you know they had to cop quality talent for the remixes, including Deetron, Booka Shade and Huxley.
Nocturnal Sunshine (aka Maya Jane Coles) – “Take Me There”
She’s not just the producer behind that amazing “Truffle Butter” beat (we joke, but it really is amazing). Maya Jane Coles, one of house music’s finest females, also goes by this techy alias. It’s a new direction for the underground queen, and we are digging it.
Modestep – “Machines”
Here’s a taste of the London band’s upcoming album, London Road. Who doesn’t love dubstep-inspired licks played with actual guitars and live drums?
