While Martin Garrix might be barely out of his teens, he’s now ensconced without a doubt in the big league. Last month, he snatched the #1 spot in the Top 100 poll, his departure from the Spinnin’ Records family last year seemingly paying off as his own STMPD RCRDS label takes flight. As such, an appearance at this year’s MTV European Music Awards was always a given.
Taking place in his home of the Netherlands on Sunday night, Garrix teamed with vocalist and MTV EMA host Bebe Rexha for a rendition of their collaboration “In the Name of Love,” the first single from the new distribution deal he’s inked with Sony Music International this year, and also his biggest hit since his breakthrough hit “Animals,” which changed his life back in 2013.
However, this was no bogus performance that saw Garrix lurking behind the decks, pretending to twist knobs. Instead, he jumped on the guitar to strum the song’s chords alongside Rhexa, with the synth melodies recreated live, courtesy of a full-blown orchestra.
