The only real way to earn your stripes as an artist is to be as authentic as humanly possible and figure out how to carve out your own creative lane in the process. Experimental bass producer Conrank is on the fast track to where those two prereqs intersect, as he continues to chip away at a signature sound that weaves together his affinity for dubstep, grime and drum & bass. On his latest release for Bassrush Records, he claims to have finally figured out the golden ratio, inching him closer and closer to his prime.

“2017 is the most exciting year yet for me,” he tells Insomniac. “I feel like my music is finally in a place where I’m actually 100 percent happy with it, and I feel like that really shows in 4 Letter Future. Mixing my UK roots, along with the influences that have come from being involved in the US bass scene, has been so much fun and has brought my sound to a whole new level. To have someone like Bassrush vouch for what I do, it’s a milestone in my career.”

This newfound confidence is easy to detect across the entire EP, as he guts open genres and uses the entrails to feed into his groundbreaking style. “Watch What I Do” is a fuzzy, tricked-out thumper with serious mind-altering properties. “Risk” doesn’t let off the accelerator, while smashing through abrupt stabs and the stompiest synthwork.

On “Carab,” twinkling tones and humming low-end take the lead, working in unison to transmit an extraterrestrial-like rattle that’ll knock your brain juice loose. Rounding out the package is “Outside Cones,” a murky, broken-beat number rolling around in floor-filling filth. From one cut to the next, 4 Letter Future is a foreshadowing effort that gives us a glimpse into a world where Conrank is in control of his own destiny.
