Freddy Be and Savi Leon’s Benevolence remix EP—on Ki Creighton’s Under No Illusion records—features Joeski’s percussive New York garage vibes, Doc Martin’s indelible West Coast dub funk, and Ki’s own tech house reshuffle of the tribal and Balearic title track.

“The main inspiration behind this track is the uplifting vocal,” say Freddy and Savi, “with that nostalgic feeling paired with a summertime vibe that’s more reminiscent to the Balearic Island sounds that influenced so many people in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, when house music culture first started to emerge in the UK via Ibiza during the Summer of Love.”

“I wanted to take the original in a deeper, more tech house mode, reminiscent of where I am musically just now,” Ki says of his remix. “I’m thrilled how the remix came out; in fact, I’m delighted with the whole structure of the full [EP].”

It’s hard to imagine this project faltering, given everyone involved. More than two decades ago, Freddy founded Monday Social—one of the longest-running parties in Los Angeles, if not the country—and Savi rocks a residency at after-hours Hollywood shindig Frenzy. Creighton has been DJing since 1991, and UNI is home to acts like Yousef, Pirupa, De La Swing Italobros and Leftwing & Kody.

“Obviously, we wanted to give it a more modern approach, along with a deeper, more percussive edge that influences both of our sounds,” says Freddy and Savi. In Savi’s mind, Ki was the one to call, and all the mixes on this EP prove his instinct was correct.

Available August 21 via Under No Illusion.
