Pop culture trends allegedly move in 20-year cycles. By this measure, we’re ripe for a 1997 rave renaissance. Right on cue, psy-bass producer Kamandi from New Zealand kicks out an updated slice of bass-leaning trance on “Clone Phone” from his Gatetrasher EP.

Kamandi—aka Tyrone Frost, who started out playing bass at 16—took his alias from the DC Comics character Kamandi the Last Boy on Earth. Frost brings a similar context to his creation, building a new world from the old touch of trance. Throwing it in a calibrated mixer with bass-driven drops and melodic accents, Kamandi produces a new kind of spacious hybrid that moves your body and takes your mind on a trip. As he put it to Insomniac recently, “This is what happened after months of getting rinsed to trance anthems.”

“Clone Phone” opens with an emotive vocal, clipped synth stabs, a steady drum roll buildup, and a smooth bass drop. Over three quick minutes, the tune creates an introspective interlude that could be mixed into a live set or pumped into your mind through headphones.

Kamandi recently shared stages with Tokimonsta, Daedalus and Gold Panda, and he’s sure to make an appearance at a festival near you this summer.
