Journalist and didactic DJ Charlie Hedges has been keeping house heads in the musical loop for years through her work in magazines, on Kiss FM’s weekday Breakfast Show, and most recently via her Skiddle.com Weekends Matter podcast. Billings alongside icons like Carl Cox at meccas like Space Ibiza, as well hot spots like Ministry of Sound and Pacha, were a natural progression. For the next phase of her evolution, Charlie set her sights on producing her own music, releasing her summery electro house debut “Kaleidoscope” in 2016.

In contrast to the sun-kissed vibes of “Kaleidoscope,” Charlie’s sophomore release, “Hit It,” dives into the shadows for a less mainstream feel. “‘Hit it,’ for me, is a straight-up club track—which might surprise a few people,” she tells Insomniac. “It’s very different from my last release and shows the more house/underground side to me and what you might expect to hear from one of my live sets.”

Ostensibly about hitting the dancefloor, “Hit It” also plays with house and disco’s innuendo tradition. Opening with a steady house shuffle, the track swells to a peak before breaking into a cascade of pitched seductive enticements, courtesy of soulful songwriter Bayku (Pitbull, Lil John, and Emeli Sande). Echoing the pleasure metaphor, Charlie adds, “With Bayku’s awesome catchy vocals, this [track] has been smashing it for me in my own sets and has already picked up some great early support from guys like Illyus & Barrientos, Disciples, 99 Souls and Bob Sinclar.” It’s easy to understand why. Whether you hear it as an ode to platonic, romantic or creative intentions, “Hit It” aims for catharsis and achieves it.
